Archive for Streamliners
A small update 2011-04-18
Posted by: | Commentsjust a few notes after a couple of weeks
first, congratulations/condolences/cheers/sympathy to the newest members of the IRM BOD.
As always, there is a lot of work to do ahead.
On the “inbound” front, we hope to have info soon on both Olympus and CBQ 1309 transport in to us.
No immediate news, other than to report that we continue to pester folks to get it done.
On the Silver Pony front, there is no real news. I have not been out there much as my time is being consumed by Barn 3 and the streamliner display. As soon as i get the set open, I will try to get back to work on our newest “friend”
Next, a few new pictures in the gallery.
BLE 25 combine and Inglehome came out into the sun a bit over the weekend to get their brakes checked.
Both passed, but Inglehome had a broken buffer frame, on the rear.
We dont know when or how it broke, but it had to involve impact/maybe during switching.
Not saying anyone did anything wrong, because hundred year old metal sometimes fails after many many impacts.
Only means that when Inglehome comes out to play, it has to be on the end, as there is now no buffer to mate any other cars.
The latest pictures were all taken in natural light without flash, and I find it interesting how the section upholstery shows up so blue.

The Barn 3 displays are up and running.
DMIR 84 floor repair is moving along.
Wayne and Shelly have gotten the subfloor done, and hope to get it sealed and prepped next weekend.
With a bit of luck, Chuck will have time to get over and replace the windows he has done over the winter.
No new pictures, hope to get more next week, after they get it done.

In Yard 5 , some progress.
The first window is in the RDC, its kind of neat to be able to see out from inside the car.
Of course, as usual, nothing was easy. The reason I chose this particular window to change was the snowdrift inside this past winter. The 30 or so screws supposedly holding the window in were in reality only two.
Then i kept my promise to myself and cleared all the paint aroud the window frame to minimize the risk of getting the icky chemicals on the new glass.
THEN all new gasket on the opening, and last but not least, getting all the screw holes to work again.
Once the glass was in place, it took another day to get all the trim and cover plates to fit properly.
BUT ITS DONE!. one down 21 to go.

CNW fans take note!
$350 each to get them replaced, donations to the RDC itself
R9934 is the fund number (remember the identity confusion?)
I have started to get the displays up and the car cleaned, so I hope to open at least the RDC this weekend.
Silver Ridge is next, and has a ways to go.
Several window ledges to install, one set of window trim in a roomette to replace, and the corridor carpet to put down.
Another new wrinkle is that Marc (YAY) found the missing ceiling vents for the roomettes, so I want to put them up as well. I have not spent enough time with this car recently, with all the other distractions, and I rpomised it that I would “make her shine” for this season.
I really want to open this weekat least a bit to get ready for the IT convention on April 30, but the time is getting late, and i really hesitate to open the set until its reasonably safe for visitors and their small children.
Birmingham is plugging along, one new wrinkle is I FINALLY got mad enough and tore out that hot water heater in the freezer unit in tyhe kitchen. Now I can think about replacing the door someday, another small step away from restauant and back toward railroad.
Pacific Peak and Loch Sloy are both ready for final prep,. but need vacuuming and a wipe down, then beds made and displays set up.
Soooo, once I get Ridge settled and safe, I should be able to get the set open.
Of course if anyone wants to pitch in, I am more than happy to provide the windex, vacuum cleaners and bed linens.
As always folks, donations remain a constant need. i anticipate about $1000 in hardware purchases this summer to use for Pony on display, AC unit and generator for power backup.
passenger car donations listed in the web store
http://www3.irm.org/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1_7
for those that wish to contribute to any other piece, donations can be made by phone or by mail
Thanks for everyones support, and we hope to make more progress soon.
Good News Bad News and Other News 2011-03-20
Posted by: | CommentsFirst the good news
the shop trucks , which Mike and crew have been slaving much of the winter, are DONE!!!!
Sunday saw them finish the last axle, freeing it in its mount and doing the other things needed to make it functional for use.
They will NOT, repeat NOT be functional for service, but they will be used to allow us to at least get cars on wheels and move them around the property.
They are all really happy that miserable project is done.
Next the bad news
It appears that the timetable for Olympus remains stalled a bit waiting for shop time in St Louis as preparation for its travel to IRM.
This probably means that in early May, after the road restrictions are lifted, the CBQ heavyweight baggage and Silver Pony will get mounted on wheels, but it means that the shop trucks will have to go under the dome and a second crane set will have to be planned once Olympus gets in.
Sigh…
And the rest
This weekend is the start of the prep for Opening Day, now less than two weeks away. so for the next couple of weeks we wont be getting much done on Silver Pony.
The immediate plan is to get Barn 3 completely ready for the public; all lights checked, all public areas cleaned up.
Much was done this past weekend toward that goal. All the car lights are done, and all the primary description signs are up.
Next weekend is time to clear aisles, replace railings, and do a general cleanup. with the trucks done and out of the way, Mike plans to spend next sunday clearing the “shop” space.
We even managed to gain some help for some of the cleanup. Eric Oleson and his “crew” are on spring break, and he convinced assistants Aiden and Emmy to come out and help him. Windows cleaned, counters dusted. Time well spent when we were busy with other tasks. Thank you to Eric and all.
Next, we will go through Yard 5 making the paths clear and safe, as it is an area that does not get a lot of supervision.
If the weather cooperates, we can start on Wednesday, we inspect all the equipment, placing warning signs and anti climbing placards. This year we hope to improve the traffic control a bit, especially on the east end of the yard where folks sometimes wander into closed areas. The exhibit cars will be open as a separate time, pending Jons ability to get the displays ready.
Finally, in time for Mothers Day, we will have the streamliner set put together and cleaned up. I really will try to have them open as “construction zones” in April as I have done in the past, but no promises, as there remains some significant work to do in the aisles, especially in Silver Ridge.
Doors are off their hinges/rollers waiting for parts, and the the carpet in the hallway is still all skewed out of line.I have to pull the heater covers the entire length of the hall to get it loose and repositioned.
Not complicated but a days worth of work. Then the displays all need to be set up, TVs, videos, handouts, not to mention all the air conditioners get re installed in vestibules.
OK enough doom and gloom
Everyone is always welcome to stop by and say “hi”. I may not have a lot of time to chat, but seeing folks helps keep us going.
As always please remember the cost of all this is not small.
Silver Pony, Olympus and the rest of the Passenger Dept continue to need (and appreciate) any and all financial support possible, large or small. We promise that evey donation will be used to its fullest.
The donation link for the IRM store site is listed on the right side of the page. Thanks to everyone that has donated.
A New Day for Passenger Car Dept
Posted by: | Commentsok folks due to circumstances we will be restoring this blog site for the Passenger Dept. I know its been a while, and i dont pretend that I have become Chatty Cathy, but I hope to provide information to our friends , visitors and long range guests.
Winter progress is taking a lot of time and energy, including the repairs needed following the Terror event in 2010, but things are moving along nicely.
The shop trucks for our new acquisition are nearly done, thanks to Mike , Ray and their group of cold weather fans.
The Lackawanna coach in the barn is getting its interior ceiling scraped and painted.
The seats for the ATSF combine are being repaired and prepped for installation.
Several windows in DMIR coach are being repaired/rebuilt, thanks to Chucks efforts over the winter.
Loch Sloy needed seven roomette doors repaired from the Terror event, all but one are done, and we await parts from our illustrious Executive Director on his westward winter jaunt. The damage to one door prompted the backdating of one wall section, and of course the NP robins egg blue was there under the carpet and glue.
Silver Ridge needs several roomette doors repaired, and these too await parts
In addition, the exhaust blower for the ventilation system went bad over the summer, and this is the time I have to replace it. The old one is out and I hope to have the new one in this weekend. It will be a 110vac motor, to bring it current, and that takes even more load off the 32vdc transformer in the car.
Pacific Peak also had one roomette door jammed into the wall, and the design of this car forced us to literally remove the wall in the corridor to access the track mechanism. This one also caused backdating of the wall section, and the colors are visible here as well.
Its interesting to see the progression of design from late 40s/early 50s to late 50s with the addition of access panels and changes in parts to strengthen the design.
for the folks that are just tuning in, yes we now have a DOME! a Cal Zephyr dome to boot.

Silver Pony arrived via flat car about three weeks ago, and will be a little while before its on wheels. But you know us, no moss gathering here…..
The car is cleaned out a lot, and the reading light circuits are up and running, so its not a bad view already. When I have the time, I will fire up the 110vac circuits and turn on the ceiling lights as well.
The car is open for tours “by appointment” as i am not in the car every day. Its current location is an all or nothing spot, so if i am working on Ridge, I cannot be near Pony, that kind of thing.
We will all be out Sunday, so if folks want to come see the new car, please let me know so I can make time to go out and unlock it.
I am going to have to re learn how to use this site, so links and pictures and stuff may not show up right now, but soon, I hope, soo…. especially with the guiding hand of our web goddess.
I think comments are allowed here, again, have to relearn. If not feel free to give a shout on the IRMlist and I will do my best to respond.
In the meantime, please everyone remember that donations are needed to move the work forward, even during this “quiet ” time of the year.
The new acquisitons now all have donation sites on the store location, so it is possible from home. All are fully deductible.

Thanks to everyone that is supporting our work.
Update October 2008
Posted by: | Commentsyes I know its been far too long and info doesnt get shared unless its written. So here we go
We face the issue of preparation and operation from early August until November, Vintage transport, then Thomas, then Showcase, then Halloween, so we face a period of time when we sometimes get a bit behind. Its hard sometimes because we have to concentrate our efforts on operations and active displays for a big chunk of time, and so much of the restoration work grinds to a halt for three months of the year. Lets try to catch up a bit
On the heavyweight front,
i reported last month that the Dover has now been painted and lettered on both sides, Bob has made great progress on both vestibules, and progress is being made inside on the corridor. There remains a bit of a problem involving the electrical feed for the car, and i hope to get it resolved completely this off season. Mike and Ray also are working on the hand brake, non functional for ?? maybe years. It might be able to go for a ride next season. even as an exterior show it will be great to show it off. Bob Hunter deserves all the kudos for moving forward all the time.
http://www.irm.org/gallery/DoverStrait
Roger has been plugging along on the bathrooms of the John McGlothan as well, and I dont want to forget to give credit where its due, even though i am sorry i dont have any new photos to include just yet. Perhaps one of the projects this off season will be a new set of pics for the photo gallery.
The Boston and Maine cafe keeps going as well. Jack made it into this months Rail and Wire.
http://www.irm.org/gallery/BM3288
With the season slowing down after this weekend, Mike hopes to get the DLW coach vestibule repairs completed this winter, as well as a couple of coach ceilings that need repairs. There a some new pics of the work in the car folder, for the structural fans.
http://www.irm.org/gallery/DLW556
A slightly different item involves road trips to Monee Il, where there are several privately held pieces being scrapped. Steam team has begun to acquire two unique locos from there, and while there are a coupkle of heavyweitght passenger cars on the property, the reality is that we do not have the funds to transport them , store them, or restore them. The decision then was made to make trips and remove parts we can use. We did acquire a set of seats for the ATSF 2544 to allow us to install authentic seating in the coach area, and remove the streamliner seats that are there.
After Halloween, the streamliner sleepers will come home and, while it will take a couple of weeks to winterize them, we have made some more progress as well.
Two of the three power poles in Yard 5 are in place and operating, so we are almost completely connected. Max had a bit of delay with some pressing personal issues, but he has been out a bit more lately, and we hope to be ready when the cars come back next week. This will give us solid electrical connections for all cars, plus decent power supply for the baggage/shop car at the end, which will make the winter much more functional. I cant wait to have them in, winterized and lit for the holidays this year.
RDC 9934 now has all the interior lights working, and I want to get the classification lights working soon, but of course getting the set “buttoned up” and settled in for the winter takes precedence.
The one passenger window that was leaking has been repaired, as we discovered that it was installed upside down, with only 3 screws holding it in instead of the designed 26. New gasket material around the exterior and a solid mount and we think we have most if not all of the water leaks in RDC solved for now.
The one cab window that is missing has been located, (at least we think so ) in the Diesel locomotive storage, and as soon as someone gets a chance they will pull it out for us and we can get that issue resolved too.
http://www.irm.org/gallery/CNW9934
Plans include progress in all three sleepers, plus some more kitchen work in Birmingham. We will have to see just how much we can get accomplished in the 4-5 months of the off season. Spring comes quick, and we feel responsible to have the display open by May, so as always, help would be neat if anyone is interested, and donations are welcome all season.
The cost of the electrical system in Yard 5 has seriously depleted our restoration funds, and there are a few pieces of interior that i would love to restore in Silver Ridge, but do not have the funding for.
We hope to get back in the habit of regular updates, and hope to see many visitors by spring.
Hope everyone has a fun autumn and a happy winter season, see you soon!
Update Sep 5 2008
Posted by: | Commentsi know its been a while, but we have been really busy with the late summer projects
First of all, to brag on Dover Strait, both sides are now lettered, and the second diaphragm is coming along
We hope to have it outside in the sunshine for everyone to see for Showcase Weekend
http://www.irm.org/gallery/DoverStrait
for those that have not noticed, the photos are now in folders for each year of work, to help keep from digging through a multipage listing
Thomas trains worked out well, no major malfunctions
The second power pole is running, and so we are now on external power with NO generators running! Max made an extra effort and got stuff installed almost as fast as the parts were delivered. On behalf of the tranquility in Yards 4 and 5….. THANK YOU!!!
Streamliner sleeper train has had its brakes checked and two problems found have both been dealt with.
We have begun to plan for next weeks showcase weekend, a bit late because no one planned (or asked) us to participate until last week, and there was no crew set up. If there is no crew for the event, the set will be open for visits throughour the evening so a night experience will be possible either way.
On top of all, the RDC brakes work!!!! Mike found a cracked pipe and we hope to get that fixed this weekend; if all goes well, we will have RDC 9934 on the tail of the train for showcase weekend! After 17 years of sitting dormant, we will get her back to life. tomorrow we hope to get the power supply run so we can use the interior lights for night operations. No headlight or horn yet…but i have been able to track down some of the circuitry so I should be able to connect both the classification lights and headlights over the fall and early winter…..
http://www.irm.org/gallery/CNW9934?page=1
see you all soon at Showcase weekend
